MADSA CPD - The Gut Microbiome in Health and Disease: Findings from a Malaysian Diabetes Cohort

6 April 2026

On 27 January 2026, MADSA Malaysia conducted a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) session.

It featured an insightful presentation titled “The Gut Microbiome in Health and Disease: Findings from a Malaysian Diabetes Cohort” by Associate Professor Dr. Siva Gowri Pathmanathan from Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM).

The session was organised exclusively (and complimentary) for MADSA Members to deepen their understanding of the growing role of the gut microbiome in human health.

The session highlighted the gut microbiome as a “hidden organ” essential for metabolic processes, immune system development, and overall health.

Key findings from a Malaysian cohort study were shared, demonstrating significant differences in gut microbial composition between individuals with and without Type 2 Diabetes.

Notably, reduced microbial diversity and lower levels of beneficial bacteria were observed in diabetic individuals, alongside an increase in pro-inflammatory microbes.

Participants also gained insights into the mechanisms linking gut dysbiosis to metabolic diseases, including inflammation, impaired gut barrier function, and insulin resistance.

The session emphasized the importance of advancing local research and fostering collaborations to develop Malaysia-specific microbiome solutions.

This CPD initiative reflects MADSA Malaysia’s ongoing commitment to professional development and knowledge-sharing, ensuring members remain updated with the latest scientific advancements relevant to healthcare and research.
