Inaugural Malaysia Microbiome Meeting 2026: Advancing Global Health Through Microbiome Science and Research

6 October 2026

The inaugural Malaysia Microbiome Meeting (MMM) 2026, held on 3–4 October 2026 at Sunway University, brought together researchers, clinicians, regulators, academics and industry representatives from Malaysia and across the region to exchange knowledge and perspectives on the evolving field of microbiome science.

Co-organised by Sunway University and B-Crobes, the two-day meeting provided a multidisciplinary platform covering areas including clinical research, microbiome-based interventions, multi-omics, women’s health, early life, chronic diseases, the gut–brain axis, One Health, and regulatory considerations for microbiome-based products.

The meeting was honoured by the presence of two distinguished Guests of Honour: YBhg. Datuk Dr. Muhammad Radzi bin Abu Hassan, former Director-General of Health Malaysia, and Professor Dr. Taruna Ikrar, Head of the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM).

A key focus of MMM 2026 was connecting scientific advancement with clinical and regulatory perspectives. The programme brought together experts from different disciplines to discuss emerging microbiome research alongside the importance of scientific evidence, product quality and safety, appropriate regulatory pathways, and meaningful healthcare applications.

The programme also highlighted Malaysia’s growing contribution to microbiome research, including locally generated clinical evidence across different health areas, while exploring opportunities for stronger research collaboration within Malaysia and Southeast Asia.

Regulatory Perspectives and MADSA Participation

Regulatory considerations formed an important part of MMM 2026, with a dedicated track addressing safety, quality and scientific evidence for microbiome-based products.

MADSA was represented by James Pereira, General Manager, who participated as a panellist alongside representatives from regulatory authorities, academia and the clinical community.

The panel provided an important platform for different stakeholders to exchange perspectives on the evolving regulatory environment, clinical evidence, product quality and the responsible development of probiotics and other microbiome-based interventions.

MADSA’s participation also reflected the importance of continued dialogue between regulators, academia, healthcare professionals and industry as microbiome science and related health products continue to develop.

MMM 2026 demonstrated the value of bringing different parts of the microbiome ecosystem together under one platform — not only to share scientific advances, but also to discuss how evidence, regulation and responsible innovation can progress alongside one another.

As microbiome science continues to evolve, platforms such as MMM can play an important role in strengthening Malaysia’s research ecosystem, encouraging regional scientific exchange and building collaborations that support better healthcare outcomes in Malaysia and beyond.
