Ganoderma lucidum is the scientific name for the Reishi mushroom or Lingzi in Mandarin. Ganoderma lucidum is a red-coloured species of Ganoderma with a limited distribution in Europe and parts of China, where it grows on decaying hardwood trees. Ganoderma lucidum is a bitter tasting fungus traditionally used in Chinese medicine.
While the Ganoderma lucidum themselves can be eaten fresh, it is also common to use powdered forms of the mushroom or extracts that contain specific molecules that may be responsible for the mushroom's potential health effects. These molecules include triterpenoids, polysaccharides, and peptidoglycans. While scientific evidence has not conclusively determined these health effects, Ganoderma lucidum is commonly taken to help with:
Possible side effects include an upset stomach and liver problems. Those who are breastfeeding, who have blood disorders, who are going to undergo surgery, and who have low blood pressure should avoid taking Ganoderma lucidum.
