Krill Oil

Last Updated: 18 September 2022

Figure 1. An image of krill.

Krill Oil is an extract prepared from a species of Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba, a tiny, shrimp-like marine animal. Like Fish Oil, Krill Oil is rich in the Omega-3 fatty acids Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA). However, there are some differences between Krill Oil and Fish Oil. For one, the Omega-3 fatty acids in Krill Oil are stored in the form of phospholipids (as opposed to triglycerides in Fish Oil), which may be easier to absorb into the bloodstream. Another difference is that Krill Oil contains a pink-orange pigment called Astaxanthin (Fish Oil does not), which has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. However, Krill Oil is generally more expensive than Fish Oil, hence may not be as easily accessible as Fish Oil.

For nutritional values, refer to the Codex entries for EPA and DHA.
