Avena sativa is the scientific name for the common Oat plant. Avena sativa is a species of cereal grain grown for its seed, which is widely consumed and commonly used as livestock feed. The plant is best grown in temperate regions because they have a lower summer heat requirement and greater tolerance of rain than other cereals, such as wheat, rye, or barley.
