Dunaliella salina

Last Updated: 18 September 2022

Figure 1. Microscope image of Dunaliella salina.

Dunaliella salina is a type of halophile (i.e. salt-loving) green unicellular micro-algae found in hypersaline environments such as salt lakes and salt evaporation ponds. Dunaliella salina is famous for its antioxidant properties due to the large amount of carotenoids that it produces, specifically Beta-carotene.

Taken as a dietary supplement, Dunaliella salina is an Antioxidant (due to its abundance of Beta-carotene) and a Vitamin A precursor (or provitamin A). Dunaliella salina may also be a source of Vitamin B12.
