Nutrition Report 2018). progress, malnutrition across the
globe remains unacceptably high.
Today, it sits at the forefront of global
health challenges.
According to the Global Nutrition Report 2018 (GNR18),
malnutrition is responsible for more ill health than any other
cause, in that all forms of malnutrition lead to various forms
of ill health and in many instances, higher levels of mortality.
There is a common misnomer that malnutrition refers to the
lack of food or nutrition caused by “not having enough to
eat”, but in fact malnutrition includes causes from “not
eating enough of the right things” and “eating too much of
the wrong things”. GNR18 categorizes malnutrition into six
distinct categories: (1) undernutrition; (2) stunting (children
under-5); (3) wasting (children under-5); (4) micronutrient
deficiencies; (5) moderate and severe underweight (adults);
and (6) overweight and obese (adults).
While poor health does not necessarily result from poor
nutrition, poor nutrition necessarily results in poor health.
Furthermore, malnutrition is not isolated to certain
geographies; it is a universal challenge that escapes no
country, not least Malaysia.
