population is still growing, it has
slowed down considerably in the past
5 years.
The slowdown in population growth is normative. As
countries develop and their socioeconomic policies mature,
families tend to have fewer children over time. Causative
factors typically include:
• A better educated population with better knowledge
of family planning.
• A greater awareness on the importance of family
planning as a result of government campaigns.
• Increasing age at marriage (i.e. population marrying
at a later age) due to lifestyle/career pursuits.
• Widening gap between median household income
and cost of living.
• Challenges/Burdens in family support structure,
particularly for dual-income families and sandwich
families.
Coupled with increasing average life expectancy, the
slowdown in birth rate means that Malaysia is ageing and
will soon experience the challenges of ageing countries.
