Diseases and ailments associated with old age population
carry significant impacts to the quality of life for the elderly
as well as the families who care for them. Typical challenges
may include:
• Loneliness due to empty nest syndrome and/or
neglect from children.
• Depression due to chronic pains or deteriorating
emotional wellbeing.
• Lack of social interaction due to decreasing mobility.
• Emotional burden due to increasing reliance on
children for day-to-day or health needs.
For example, dementia, a disease most closely related to
ageing, can be a debilitating disease for both patient and
familial caretakers, as anecdotes from Japan have illustrated.
Based on the findings of the World Dementia Report
published in 2015, prevalence of dementia in South East
Asian countries range between n% (population age 60-65)
and nn% (population age 90+). This translates to
approximately nnn,nnn dementia sufferers in 2018, which
will nearly double to nnn,nnn by 2030.
