Three drivers underpin the Malaysian Figure 1.4: Malaysia Nutritional Health
nutritional health trends of today: (1) Trends: Tackling Key Nutritional Challenges
Demographic Ageing; (2) Lifestyle of Today.
Pursuits; and (3) Maternal and Source: Eigis Analysis.
Children Health.
Three pillars drive nutritional health trends in Malaysia, and
they span the entire age spectrum of the population:
• Demographic ageing. As Malaysians live longer and
birth rates continue to decline, the percentage of old
age population increases. Nutrition is critical not
only to encourage healthy ageing, but to support a
sustainable national healthcare ecosystem.
• Lifestyle pursuits. Modern, neoliberalism lifestyles
are fast-paced and have contributed to poor dietary
habits. At the same time, awareness on the
importance of nutrition (as well as access to
knowledge) has never been higher, with sources of
information readily available online.
• Maternal and children health. Good nutritional
health starts from infancy. Awareness and emphasis
on maternal health, as well as on the health of
children, both physically and emotionally, have been
rising to the forefront.
The following sections in this chapter discusses each of the
three pillars and their impacts on the Malaysian nutritional
health landscape in turn.
