Potassium iodide is a chemical compound (chemical formula KI) used as medication and as a dietary supplement. As a medication, Potassium iodide is used to treat hyperthyroidism, in radiation emergencies, and to protect the thyroid gland when certain types of radiopharmaceuticals are used. As a dietary supplement, Potassium iodide is used to treat Iodine deficiency. Potassium iodide is included in the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.
