from ~nn% in the early 2000s.
National studies conducted in 2014 and 2003 revealed that
prevalence of non-vitamin and mineral supplement usage
among Malaysian adults have increased significantly. In
2003, the prevalence rate was measured at nn.n%; in 2014,
this has risen to nn.n%. The growth in non-vitamin and
mineral supplements usage was far larger than vitamin and
mineral supplements usage (2003: nn.n% to 2014: nn.n%).
This was consistent with market value trends, which saw the
growth of non-vitamin and mineral supplements outpacing
vitamin and mineral supplements.
Among the socio-demographic factors which underpin
consumption behaviour in Malaysia were locality, gender,
ethnicity, age, education, and income. Women, older adults,
Malaysians with higher education levels and with higher
monthly incomes were more likely to consume non-vitamin
and mineral supplements compared to other socio-
demographic groups. Urbanites were more likely to consume
these products; so were Malays and Chinese adults. Body
weight (BMI) and physical activity were not significantly
correlated to non-vitamin and mineral supplements usage.
