National studies conducted in 2014 and 2003 revealed that
prevalence of vitamin and mineral supplement usage among
Malaysian adults have increased significantly. In 2003, the
prevalence rate was measured at nn.n%; in 2014, this has
risen to nn.n%.
Among the socio-demographic factors which underpin
consumption behaviour in Malaysia were gender, age,
education, and income. Women, older adults, Malaysians
with higher education levels and with higher monthly
incomes were more likely to consume vitamin and mineral
supplements compared to other socio-demographic groups.
Locality (urban vs. rural), ethnicity (Malay, Chinese, Indian),
body weight (BMI), and physical activity were not
significantly correlated to vitamin and mineral supplements
usage.
Across product groups, Vitamin C and multi-vitamin/mineral
products enjoyed the highest penetration rates at nn.n% and
n.n% of Malaysian adults (age 18-59). This was followed by
Calcium (n.n%) and Vitamin B-complex (n.n%). Folic Acid
(n.n%), Vitamin E (n.n%), Iron (n.n%) and others were the
lowest at less than n.n% each.
