Health, Nils Milman (2015). promoting maternal and children
health has always been emphasized.
Social media has raised awareness to
another level, and mothers are doing
more for themselves and their
children today.
Many Malaysian mothers today have better access to
information about their nutritional needs as well as their
children’s compared to previous generations. The advent of
the world wide web and subsequently the proliferation and
normalization of social media has enabled this
tremendously. For the first time in history, mothers can
leverage on peer/community knowledge bases in addition to
professional ones to make the best decisions for themselves
and their families.
Nevertheless, challenges exist. Disparity in access to
information between urban, suburban, and rural
communities are still significantly large; the quality of
information, particularly in peer/community groups may not
be rigorous nor reliable; and remedial actions can only be
taken only if diagnosis has first taken place. The government
has been doing more to raise awareness across the strata,
which has translated to positive outcomes.
