Addressing malnutrition in the Figure 1.14: Malaysia Annual Direct and
population is not only for healthy Indirect Economic Costs due to Disabilities,

from malnutrition-related disabilities Source: Eigis Analysis (Base Data: Economic
are extremely significant. Intelligence Unit; Department of Statistics
Malaysia).
The economic costs arising from malnutrition-related
disabilities are estimated in two dimensions:
• Direct costs. Refers to the economic costs that must
be expended to treat and care for the related
disabilities.
• Indirect costs. Refers to the economic value that is
lost due to a loss in productivity and/or inability to
work.
In 2018, it is estimated that the economic costs arising from
diabetes, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, and anaemia
alone ranges between MYRnn.n billion and MYRnn.n billion.
This amounts to approximately n% to n% of Malaysia’s (real)
GDP in 2017.
By 2030, economic costs of the same are projected to
balloon by nn% and reach between MYRnn.n billion and
MYRnn.n billion (sans inflation) if no interventions are taken.
Considering that Malaysia’s average (real) GDP growth in
recent years registered in the vicinity of n% to n%, the
economic costs are substantial.
